Renowned nouveau cirque ensemble Compagnie 111 returns to BAM following their BAM debut The Seven Boards of Skill (2008 Next Wave), with the US premiere of the darkly playful Sans Objet, as part of the 30th Next Wave Festival.

At once ominous and strangely beautiful, Aurélien Bory’s Sans Objet is an acrobatic dialogue between man and machine. Situated onstage, a large object shrouded in black plastic begins to move—its robot head peering out into the audience, exuding an eerie sentience. Two men in suits appear, responding to the object (a real-life automotive prototype from the 1970s) with a language of precise, mechanized movement. Soon enough, the men and the machine move in tandem, performing a captivating ballet between soul and steel that examines where one stops and the other begins.

A la fois inquiétant et étrangement beau, Sans Objet d’Aurélien Bory est un dialogue acrobatique entre l’homme et la machine. Situé sur scène, un grand objet enveloppé dans du plastique noir commence à bouger, sa tête de robot scrute l’auditoire, exsudant une sensibilité étrange. Deux hommes en costumes apparaissent, répondant à l’objet (un vrai prototype automobile des années 1970) avec un langage précis et des mouvements mécaniques. Assez rapidement, les hommes et la machine bougent en tandem, réalisant un ballet envoûtant entre l’âme et de l’acier qui examine où l’un s’arrête et où commence l’autre.
Le BAM est une institution culturelle reconnue internationalement, grâce à son festival annuel, The Next Wave Festival créé il y a 30 ans. Très connu pour ses spectacles avant-gardistes, c’est l’endroit où il faut absolument aller si vous ne voulez pas passer pour un touriste/inculte !
“Avec Sans objet j’ai voulu introduire sur scène un robot industriel ayant la force de déplacer des éléments de décor aussi bien que des acteurs. La machine devient un protagoniste à part entière. Il s’agit d’un bras articulé, mécanique. On l’utilise comme une marionnette – un être 100% technologique – dans son dialogue avec un homme contemporain ordinaire. Ces personnages sont obligés de cohabiter sur scène, dans l’impossibilité de s’ignorer. C’est comme si l’homme d’aujourd’hui était composé de deux facettes : il est encore du côté de l’humain, mais de plus en plus dans la technologie. Ce rapport entre l’homme et la machine est en pleine évolution. Le robot est arrivé dans le monde industriel dans les années 70 ; l’idée est de l’extraire de son milieu en le plaçant sur scène. Il devient sans objet, acteur. On observe un double mouvement : le robot tend à s’humaniser, et l’homme à se robotiser. La performance est au coeur de cette question. Autrefois, pour mettre à l’épreuve ses capacités, il se mesurait à l’animal. Aujourd’hui le défi est dans la technologie. Ainsi dans la surprise de sa danse avec l’homme, le robot déplacé de son contexte industriel – devenu fonctionnellement inutile–, nous rappelle à la nature même de l’art : être absolument sans objet ?“Aurélien Bory
