Apple’s plans to once again change the dynamics of the mobile world are becoming clearer. Bloomberg reported today that the device maker has plans for a universal SIM card that I first reported on in October, and Apple is seeking a way to make it possible for consumers to pay for mobile access from multiple carriers via iTunes. The result of that hardware shift and business model change turns Apple into its own mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) and puts Apple, instead of the carrier, in control of the customer relationship.

The Bloomberg article says:

Apple is working on a technology called a Universal SIM, which would let iPhone users toggle between GSM networks without having to switch the so-called SIM cards that associate a phone with a network, according to one person. This would help cut the cost of distributing and managing millions of SIM cards. The new features could also give Apple an advantage over mobile carriers in influencing customers. The device would be affordable without a carrier subsidy, so buyers would not need to agree to terms, such as termination fees, that carriers demand in exchange for subsidizing the cost of the phone. Apple has also worked on redesigned iPhone software that would let customers choose a network and configure their device on their own, without relying on a store clerk or representative of a carrier, according to the person.

Wow, it sounds exactly like what I described back in October after hearing from some panicked European wireless carriers about the hardware. At the time, sources described the Universal SIM as being a project Apple was working on with Gemalto, a SIM card maker as follows:

The Gemalto SIM, according to my sources, is embedded in a chip that has an upgradeable flash component and a ROM area. The ROM area contains data provided by Gemalto with everything related to IT and network security, except for the carrier-related information. The flash component will receive the carrier related data via a local connection which could be the PC or a dedicated device, so it can be activated on the network. Gemalto will provide the back-end infrastructure that allows service and number provisioning on the carrier network.

Wednesday, Apple Insider reported that Apple was granted a patent on software that would allow a phone to “collect rate information from participating wireless networks within a region and automatically select or allow users to select the best option.” That patent, plus a Universal SIM, or even the dual-mode CDMA and GSM iPhone Apple is currently selling to Verizon users today, makes the idea of an Apple network plausible.

Would carriers go for it? So far, the reaction to the thought among major operators has been fear and loathing, but Apple has managed to push the envelope in the past, such as cutting the carrier out of its revenue-sharing model on its app store and keeping the carrier software off its phone. It’s possible there are carriers who would welcome the opportunity to have iPhone users hop on and off its network in exchange for a chunk of the revenue those high-data users provide. Sprint, for example, has talked about embracing such a wholesale model in the past. LightSquared, which hopes to build a wholesale LTE network in the U.S., is another potential network that might want to play this game.

The Bloomberg article also discussed a smaller and cheaper iPhone as another project at Cupertino. Bloomberg says it could cost about $ 200, as compared to the current iPhone price of $ 649.99 for the low-end, 16 GB model. That smaller handset could work well with this MVNO model, because it would be cheaper for the end user and less reliant on carrier subsidies. In the U.S., carriers tend to offer phones at less than their cost in exchange for the subscriber signing a contract. Of course, if the subscriber is hopping from network to network in search of the lowest rate or best quality of service, a carrier subsidy no longer works, which means Apple has to offer a cheaper phone.

In a world where carriers lose their exclusivity and have to compete not just every time a customer buys a new handset or renews a device, but every minute solely on their network and price, a true competitive market for mobile broadband could emerge. As an MVNO, if it can lower the price for service with a compelling and cheap handset, Apple wins and wins big. Who would want an Android phone if it doesn’t come with competitive data access? As for carriers, their dumb-pipe nightmares are just beginning.

In case you live under a rock, a short recap of “the lost iPhone” saga.

6 months ago Gawker Media admitted that it paid ,000 to get their hands on a prototype of a fourth-generation iPhone for its gadget blog, Gizmodo. Seller of the device told the editors of Gizmodo and other technology blogs that he “found” it unattended in a bar.

I’m not trying to debate if buying a lost or stolen phone is legal or not. This is for the big guys. My opinion on the subject is that as long as Gizmodo did not pay to get the phone stolen in the first place, it sounds legitimate to publish the info (although I think it’s wrong). In comparison Techcrunch did post stolen Twitter documents aka Twittergate [documents stolen from Twitter’s servers- not lost, or found. Stolen…and the thief is actually behind bars in France for hacking.] and I was shocked. Maybe my expectations for TechCrunch ethics are higher than for Gizmodo.

There was a before April 2010 and an after. Gizmodo was the underdog gadget blog, TechCrunch the REAL valley mag (no reference to Valleywag – a Gawker zine) and Mashable the gossip tech people magazine.

What happened next? Gizmodo boomed with 4M unique (up to 5M in April, more than TechCrunch and Mashable altogether).

Gizmodo got more publicity for this stunt then any PR could dream of.

Mainstream media started leaking the info on national networks and traffic picked up almost instantly.

Oddly they didn’t ‘take’ any customers readers from their competitors; on the contrary they brought nearly 3 Million fresh souls into the game.

Was it worth it? Hell yeah. And for everyone! Do I approve? No, but I’ve proven wrong many times.

Now that 6 months have passed I see no downside for Gizmodo.

Apple screwed this one up pretty badly. Losing a prototype in a bar was epic. Denying and covering up the mess was like pouring oil on fire. Finally sending the Feds after Gizmodo made Jason Chen look like Robin Hood and Steve Jobs an arrogant little rich kid going after his lost toy. Last but not least, Gizmodo is banned to any Apple event. No biggie there.

Don’t they have teams full of damage control experts in Cupertino? PR moguls?

Apple is a marketing raw model for tens of thousands of entrepreneurs. Where did it go wrong? Why such a drama?

A simple “Yes this is one prototype of a phone we might or might not decide to launch. It’s just that – a prototype. We would appreciate a prompt return of the device in our lab.” would have sufficed to kill the story.

Was the all thing staged to get more publicity?

Obviously a phone was lost and Apple’s execs were all over the case. But Jobs is smart enough to make the best of any given situation- so yes, it’s possible that they played it all along to get more coverage for the launch of the iPhone 4.

Arrington said he would have not paid for the phone. Not so sure he’d say that again today.

TechCrunch is by far my favorite source of information. I can’t read Gizmodo – too inquireresq– and Mashable is full of buttons and boxes which makes the content completely unattractive.

I’m glad Mike sold TechCrunch to AOL. Hope they make good use of his baby.

SAN FRANCISCO — Facing intense competition from phone makers wedded to Google’s Android software, Steven P. Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, finally plans to make the iPhone available on Verizon Wireless, the largest wireless carrier in the United States.

After more than three years of using only AT&T cellphone networks, Apple is now making a version of the iPhone 4 for Verizon’s network, according to a person who is in direct contact with Apple. Apple and Verizon will begin selling the phone early next year, said the person, who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity because the plans were supposed to be confidential and he did not want to alienate his contacts at Apple.

Apple and Verizon Wireless declined to comment.

The arrival of the iPhone on Verizon, which has long been expected and frequently rumored, could sharply alter the dynamics of the smartphone market in the United States. The iPhone remains the best-selling smartphone. But around the world, many carriers, especially those that do not have access to the iPhone, have been promoting an array of handset models running on Google’s Android software. Collectively, those phones now outsell the iPhone.

This week, Nielsen reported that Android accounted for 32 percent of the new smartphones sold in the United States in last six months. By comparison, the iPhone accounted for 25 percent. The numbers confirm those of other research organizations.

The Android’s rapid ascent threatens to blunt Apple’s lead in the market for high-end smartphones. No other Apple product brings as much revenue for the company as the iPhone, and analysts say that seeing that lucrative market imperiled may have finally pushed Apple into ending its exclusivity with AT&T.

“Android has tremendous momentum,” said A. M. Sacconaghi Jr., an analyst with the research firm Sanford C. Bernstein & Company. Mr. Sacconaghi said that the growth of Android was in large part because the iPhone was not available on Verizon and some major carriers overseas. “Apple moving to sign up these carriers is very important to help mitigate Android momentum,” he said.

A Verizon iPhone could quickly tilt the marketplace back in Apple’s favor. For all its success, the iPhone on AT&T has been plagued by complaints of poor network coverage, especially in some major cities like New York and San Francisco. Many potential customers have chosen to buy Android handsets from other carriers to avoid problems with dropped calls and dead zones.

But many surveys show that many owners of Android handsets would buy an iPhone, if it were available on Verizon. At the same time, AT&T iPhone customers may switch to Verizon as their contracts expire, even though they would have to buy a new phone to do so. Apple’s AT&T phone, which uses G.S.M. networking technology, would not work on Verizon’s network, which uses a different networking technology called C.D.M.A.

“It is going to have a fairly disruptive impact when it lands,” said Charles Wolf, an analyst with Needham & Company.

Another factor that could be pushing Apple to end its AT&T exclusivity is the impending arrival of phones running Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7 software. The two companies are making a joint announcement about its phones Monday. Early reviews of the devices have been positive, and Microsoft, which has faltered repeatedly in the phone business, plans to spend heavily to market the new handsets.

“Windows phones should not be dismissed,” Mr. Wolf said. “They will be a major player in the market.”

While the arrival of the iPhone on Verizon had long been expected, some industry insiders doubted that Apple would bring the iPhone to Verizon before the carrier deployed its next-generation network, known as L.T.E., or Long-Term Evolution.

But in an interview this week, Tony Melone, the chief technology officer of Verizon Wireless, suggested that those doubters could be wrong. Mr. Melone did not comment on the iPhone, but he said that while Verizon would begin introducing its new network in 38 American cities by the end of the year, the company’s older 3G network would continue to grow for several years. He also said that Verizon would continue “selling 3G devices well into the decade, possibly through the end of the decade.”

However, while L.T.E. phones will be backward-compatible so they can run on Verizon’s older 3G network, those 3G phones won’t run on the new, faster L.T.E. network.

The arrival of the iPhone to Verizon could further increase Apple’s bottom line, with some analysts predicting the company could sell an additional 10 million devices per year. But analysts say that investors have long expected Apple and Verizon to come to terms eventually, and Apple’s stock price already reflects that.

Indeed, over the last year, a flurry of reports have predicted a Verizon iPhone was imminent. On Wednesday, The Wall Street Journal reported that the iPhone would be available on Verizon early next year.
